Bright Solstice Greetings to you!
The summer solstice is the time of the sun's peak power. As the moon grows full and comes into direct alignment with the earth, so does the sun. The moon's cycle is 28 days, giving us the measure of time "(moon)th" or month, the sun's cycle is 365 days giving us our year. At this point, in the middle of June we experience the longest day of the year. This is the day when the solar power is at it's peak, and in direct alignment with our little blue planet. After this long hot day, the sun diminishes, with days growing shorter and cooler until the winter solstice in December.
This part of the cycle is when the serotonin in our brain is also at it's peak, giving us the optimum biochemical environment for high energy activity and enjoyment! It is easy to see how summer's sweet enjoyment flows easily from these conditions.
The Reverend Alex and I led our largest ritual ever this June 20th for the Summer Solstice at the House of Bliss. I was joined by esteemed authors and visionary magicians Merlin and Donald Michael Kraig. I was also joined by the magical Renfey and her King consort Kor. The veil was certainly thin, and the wee folk joined us in merriment into the dawn hours. There was some of the most beautiful, heartfelt music shared... sometimes up to three music jams going on at the same time in different parts of the house. We dined on fresh organic fruit and chocolates, satisfying our thirst with champagne and mead. It was an incredibly magickal evening, with new intimacy, artistry and other positive effects dancing off into the future.
I am scribing to you from the sky, high above Nevada on my way to Colorado for the International New Age trade show. I'm attending and performing for the first time. I was alerted to this truly amazing event by my friend Raven Digitalis, who has his wand on the pulse of the magickal community. I am so looking forward to meeting new members of my tribe.
Once I return home we will be working full blast on the upcoming performances! I am really hoping you can make it to one of my upcoming shows. The July 10th show at the Derby should be amazing! My lovely family of musicians, dancers and circus performers has coalesced into a tightly knit performance troupe! We have created such a supportive creative environment. I am excited to share what we've come up with.
I am also really proud of the GPW trailer I created in April for our Batman Universe live action series "Forsaken". We are going back to the old days of the comic serial. We tell our story in 7 little 10 minute webisodes, as like an actual comic book. Each episode will feature another great villain from our legendary costume troupe Gotham Public Works. I have been working on this project from the beginning, and have work the various hats of producer, 1st AD, composer, talent and post production supervisor. I am immensely proud what we've all accomplished. Making film is truly a passion I could lose myself in. If you are unable to come to our premiere in San Diego, never fear! We will post the trailer online shortly thereafter.
The other amazing thing in my life has been my Yoga Teachers Training. I am studying to be a yoga teacher with my respected friend and my Maharani (sanscrit for Queen) Christy Marsden. She has a great little yoga studio in Burbank called Yoga Blend, where I practice, and occasionally perform or teach workshops. I have been pursuing this deep knowledge about yoga, and I must say it is not at all what I expected. I felt I would be learning about the poses, exotic variations and their sanscrit names. Certainly this is a part of it, but I would say it's only about 20% of what I am learning. We are deep in the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali, grasping a lineage that's over 5,000 years old.
One of the most powerful concepts I have grasped so far is a personal commitment:
More Sustained Joy for Me
In our culture it is very much the norm for people to live in rather co-dependant relationships. We believe our happiness is outside of us somewhere. Some magical person or experience will come along and create that joy for us. I personally have my sun in the 5th house, and have always been drawn to learning about life through pleasurable love affairs. Well, there is the pleasurable part, and then the not-so pleasurable part...
So making this commitment to "more sustained joy for me" means that I need to make choices which lead me to the kind of joy which I can sustained. Not the quick fix kind of choices, but the harder, deeper ones.
It also means that I must separate my joy from my amazing partner and his happiness. I take great pleasure in giving him joy, but it's easy to sublimate my own joy chasing his happiness. When I succeed and make him happy this works out fine... but a fair amount of the time my attempts at bringing him joy simply do not succeed. Whether I have misunderstood him, or tried to make him happy when it just ain't gonna happen, it still leads to the result of me feeling bad about myself. In addition I've just put off my own pleasures to accommodate him.
What I have learned is that my cup must be full before I can offer it to others.
So I have been taking the time to hike with my dogs in the beautiful forest near my home. I have been doing yoga in the garden, keeping my journal, and playing music just for fun. I have extended my grooming ritual to include anointing my body and honoring it as the body of the Goddess herself. I have been setting my High Priestess Productions work aside and making time for my work on the astral plane. Taking the appropriate time to tend to my subtler energy body. All of these things are bringing such joy and balance into my life, that I have more than enough joy and energy to give adoringly to my amazing Reverend. This action, which seemed selfish to my parched spirit, is actually necessary self care. After all, who else in the world will see to it that my inner needs are met? No one can take responsibility for that but me.
Take a day this month and really give yourself something delightful. Whether it's a fine meal, an evening alone in your own house, a yoga class or a trip to the beach. It's just that spiel about the oxygen masks on the airplane! Feed your soul first, then share the bounty with those you love.
